I'd like to invite you to a launch event in June to see what I've been working on for the past two years. The exhibition will feature work from Whitehawk residents Lisa Pettitt, Sharon Scaife and myself.
Tickets are free, but it would be really helpful if you could reserve your place. And please pass this on to people you know who might be interested, especially people in East Brighton.
The seeds for this project started in 1974 when I was born and my family moved into a council flat on the Bristol Estate in East Brighton. It's been 20 years since I lived there, but my interest in the area has never really gone away.
Over the last few years, I've become interested in how people live and work, the power imbalance that exists in communities, and the negative perceptions a place can have. This led me back to the place I grew up where I've been supporting a small group, helping them notice the extraordinary and mundane buried in the everyday.
The exhibition will run for a week, and we will be holding an informal launch event on the 11th of June. We’re not exactly sure of the format for the event, but, we are very keen for this event to open up discussion and dialogue, so there probably won't be talks in a traditional sense. There will be photographs, stories, and sound, which will be exhibited for the rest of the week.
I'm really proud of the work we've made together, and I’d love for you to be there.
