I am looking for people like you to take part in a storytelling project about life in Whitehawk, Manor Farm and Bristol Estate. I lived on Bristol Estate for the first 20 years of my life, and have a real interest in the people that live there now.
What is the purpose of this project?
Search online for statistics about the area, and you will be sure to find a pretty negative portrayal of East Brighton (for simplicity sake, I will use this term to describe Bristol Estate, Manor Farm and Whitehawk). One of the questions that kept coming up for me was, who are these statistics serving and how accurate to people’s lived experiences are they?
So this project is an attempt to do one thing, to find and document the stories behind the statistics. Over the next six months, I'm going to be working closely with four residents, supporting them in the process of documenting their lives.
What will happen if you take part?
The project will involve me supporting you in documenting your own life. That might include taking photographs, recording sound, collecting old photos or things from your life.
The things we gather will be turned into stories about your life and published as part of this project. I want the work to be shared locally and on a broader scale, and will work with you to come up with the best way to do that. Most importantly, you will own the work you make, and have complete control over how it used.
I will be sharing some work in progress updates on this website.
Why would you want to take part?
I hope that uncovering and documenting stories about your life will not only be an enjoyable experience, but it will also offer insight into how you live your life that may be useful on a personal level. You will learn skills connected to storytelling and documentary making. Most importantly, this work is about listening and learning from local people. I hope the stories are not only entertaining but that we might uncover useful knowledge to support the community.
Will my taking part in this project be kept confidential?
Any information you share with me will be treated in confidence. I will do everything in my power to keep your participation anonymous unless you permit me to do otherwise. Everything we record will be held on a computer, and I will follow the Data Protection Act guidelines in how I handle this material.
A bit about me
I was born in the Sussex County in 1974, and not long after, moved into 146 Donald Hall Road on the Bristol Estate. I lived in that flat for around ten years, before moving across the road to 93 Donald Hall Road, where I lived until I was 19. I went to school at St Marks and Stanley Deason. My family have a long history in Whitehawk, with my grandparents on my mum's side living there throughout the 50’s and 60’s. Both sets of grandparents lived on the Bristol Estate throughout my childhood, and my nan Vera still lives on Turton Close.
Over the past few years I've been documenting different people's lives with my camera and audio recorder, here are some links to that work:
